A couple of weeks ago, Trevor and I took some much-needed time for us and were treated to a date night at Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza. We’ve had quite a rough year so far: I quit my job with Trip/Skyscanner in March after 8 years, and went with LuLaRoe full-time. Being an entrepreneur is no easy task, so I haven’t had as much time for this, which is my real passion.

Plus, my best friend got engaged and asked me to be Matron of Honor! (I hate that title…can’t I just pretend I’m still a maid?) Bridal festivities have taken up some time, AND at the beginning of July, I was felled by….chickenpox.

Yes. Chickenpox.

Don’t ask me how. I find it just as shocking and humorous as you do that I caught that virus at age 30…but after a grueling two weeks, I’m back and running full force again. Tomorrow, I leave for a thee-day convention in Anaheim – so there really is no rest for the wicked.

Anyway, if you’re looking for an easy, affordable place for date night this summer, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza is perfect. There is both inside and outside dining (outside is reminiscent of Mediterranean al fresco dining), and the food is fabulous.

Naturally, we started with cocktails. Interestingly, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza doesn’t serve hard alcohol – they serve something called “Han” cocktails, which is lighter liquor with just half the calories. Admittedly, they weren’t as strong as we prefer (hello, we’re Irish whiskey lovers), but they were light and really refreshing on a hot evening.

Because we didn’t have ENOUGH carbs, Trevor wanted the garlic parmesan fries. I mean, I didn’t exactly resist…

We had trouble deciding on a pizza to share, so of course we got one full one for each of us. Trevor went with the cheese on cheese on cheese (surprising no one), while I opted for my favorite appetizer in pizza form: Burrata. This buffalo milk cheese is creamy and soft, perfect for a pizza topping, and it was accompanied by sharp romano cheese and pesto. It was, in a nutshell: delicious.

Because we were salivating at this point of ordering, we ALSO ordered the chicken fettuccine alfredo. It was perfectly creamy, rich, and cheesy – unlike many alfredos we’ve both had that are full of cream but no flavor.

To top it all off, we splurged on what we THOUGHT was a small ice cream sundae.

It wasn’t.

Loaded with chocolate sauce and enough nuts to feed a parade of elephants, it was definitely the most impressive display of “sundae” I’ve ever seen – or tasted. But we had to be rolled out after this.

This was the most food – and CARBS – we have eaten in one sitting since we started a keto diet in January, so we took quite a bit of it home. Thank goodness for doggy bags…and leftovers for the next three meals.

We were quite impressed, though, and definitely want to keep Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza in our rotation of date night spots. If you’re looking for good food and a fresh atmosphere (with locations all over the county!), this is a good bet.
